The Best Ways to Naturally Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation can wreak havoc in your body. Many sources of inflammation are known, and if you can pinpoint certain sources–such as dietary triggers–you can avoid the inflammatory response. How can you reduce inflammation? There are various natural methods, including the use of CBD.


Inflammation plays a critical role in the body’s immune response. Without inflammation, there is no healing. When the body senses harm–whether from a cut on the outside or a virus on the inside–it produces an inflammatory response. The body sends white blood cells and chemicals to cope with distress or invaders, while dispatching proteins and fluids that initiate processes leading to increased warmth and swelling in the affected area to promote healing. That’s the upside of inflammation.

The downside is that the immune system can go into overdrive, resulting in chronic inflammation. More and more, researchers believe that chronic inflammation is responsible for all kinds of ailments, including autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even cancer.

Signs of chronic inflammation include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Mouth sores
  • Pain, often in the abdomen, chest or joints
  • Rashes

Causes of Inflammation

The best-known causes of inflammation are wounds, infections and anything that results in damaged tissue. If you suffer an open wound, for example, inflammation occurs. If the wound is left untreated, pus appears, but that should eventually discharge. This is followed by granulation, or the formation of new tissue. While infection and inflammation are not synonymous, infections cause inflammation.

Chronic inflammation may result from certain viruses that the body cannot conquer, foreign objects in the body or, most often, an overactive immune reaction. When the culprit is an immune disorder, the body mistakes healthy tissue for an invader and tries to destroy it.

Environmental factors also play a role in causing inflammation. People exposed to low levels of toxins or other contaminants over the long term may develop chronic inflammation.

Some diseases may cause chronic inflammation. These include:

  • Asthma
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Hepatitis
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Periodontitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sinusitis

How to Reduce Inflammation

In addition to avoiding known triggers, consider using CBD for chronic inflammation. CBD possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Many people choose CBD for pain relief, and pain relief occurs because inflammation is reduced. While over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen also reduce inflammation, these medications can have serious side effects, including increased risk of a cardiovascular incident, such as a heart attack. Natural substances such as CBD capsules–along with turmeric and ginger–produce an anti-inflammatory response without potential side effects.

Eating an anti-inflammatory diet along with using CBD can also help. Such a diet involves eliminating sugary, processed foods and replacing them with natural whole foods, including those containing plenty of inflammation-fighting antioxidants. The well-known Mediterranean diet, which consists primarily of fresh vegetables, fish and healthy fats is a good example of an anti-inflammatory diet.

CBD helps reduce chronic pain and inflammation by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Part of the endocannabinoid system’s job is to regulate immune response and pain. When CBD interacts with endocannabinoid receptors–the neurotransmitters binding to the nervous system’s cannabinoid receptors–the interaction results in pain relief. One of the reasons CBD is recommended for treating common problems such as acne is its ability to reduce inflammation.
